The company
High Speed Two (HS2) is Britain’s new high-speed rail line under construction from London to the North-West. It is the largest infrastructure project in Europe and the most important economic and social regeneration project in decades.
Skanska, as part of the Skanska Costain STRABAG joint venture, is designing and constructing major tunnels in the approach to the London terminus at Euston station.
The route length being delivered by the joint venture covers over 26km, with two 21km long and up to 50m deep tunnels running from Euston to West Ruislip.
‘Bon Appetit’ manages the contract to cater for 200-500 workers on the Hertfordshire site 24/7.
The challenge
Bon Appetit manages a kitchen and chefs feeding up to 500 workers during day shifts. They recognised operating the facility 24/7 to cater for 200+ night shift workers wasn’t cost-effective.
Catering vans offered alternative services, but couldn’t offer consistency 24/7.
Bon Appetit were looking for a solution that was:
- Cost-effective
- Available 24 hours a day
- Able to feed hundreds of staff quickly
- Providing nutritious meals
Our solution
Nosh identified a dual refrigerator/oven smart-vending solution to store pre-packed meals for the workers. Workers could then select their favourite meal on a touchscreen and the machine would heat the meal within two minutes. Now, the existing canteen space can remain accessible even when the kitchen is closed. An unattended, self-service solution can provide hot meals 24/7.
From the initial discussion, Bon Appetit launched Nosh within 2 weeks.
Nosh would deliver chef-prepared meals produced at its offsite kitchen facility. We supported the launch by working with Bon Appetit on messaging and posters, letting the workers know about this exciting new service.
To make sure that the builders don’t tire of the meals on offer, Nosh created a weekly rota of different food options. HS2’s top 3 favourite meals are:
- Thai Green Curry
- Spaghetti Bolognese
- Smokey BBQ Chicken
Why would you recommend Nosh?
The project has been such a success we’re now considering it the first phase of a much wider opportunity to benefit catering contracts. We haven’t identified a supplier that can match Nosh for quality, and cost efficiency while meeting a 24/7 need.
Bon Appetit is so pleased with staff feedback and the fully managed catering delivery, it is scaling Nosh’s smart vending of chef-made meals to more sites.
In fact, half of all workers tried Nosh within 7 weeks and this is growing weekly.
After 8 weeks, 55 % of workers who tried Nosh returned to enjoy more.
Half of the orders are enjoyed during kitchen open hours demonstrating Nosh is a 24/7 solution.
